What is Grape Seed Extract?
Grape Seed Extract (GSE) is exactly what it sounds like.
It is a dietary supplement that is made from the extract of grape seeds.
Seeds in general have a ton of nutrients in them, since all those nutrients are going to be used to help plants grow, but grape seeds in particular have a lot of special nutrients called proanthocyanidins (PACs).
PACs are basically super strong antioxidants that can help out the body in many different ways.
These antioxidants are what contain all of the benefits from supplementing your diet with grape seed extract.
How Does Grape Seed Extract Work?
Primarily GSE is used for it’s vast antioxidant properties.
In your body, oxidants, also known as free radicals, can gradually build up and cause all sorts of harm. They are basically micro toxins floating around your body. If too many of them build up in a particular part of your body, such as your brain or liver, they may cause a lot of problems.
Antioxidants are nutrients that fight free radicals floating around your body, removing these free radicles is what helps your body out the most.
GSE in particular has a lot of catechin (PAC) antioxidants. By supplementing with these particular antioxidants it has been reported that it may help increase blood flow throughout your body.
Studies have shown that it helps to improve blood flow by working to increase the effectiveness of nitric oxide, which in turn helps to relax blood vessels throughout the body and promote blood flow.
Another important molecule found in GSE is known as procyanidin B2, which has been reported in scientific studies to act as an aromatase inhibitor.
Aromatase is an enzyme in the body that converts testosterone into estrogen. By limiting or blocking the enzyme from converting testosterone into estrogen it works in a dual purpose for hormone regulation in the body.
It helps to lower/control the amount of estrogen floating in the body and it helps to increase testosterone levels in the body.
It has also been noted in several scientific studies that supplementing with GSE may be responsible for helping to reduce blood pressure levels and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels in people who take it for 8+ weeks at a time.
What Are The Potential Benefits Of Taking Grape Seed Extract?
- Improved blood flow
- Lowered blood pressure
- Antioxidant properties
- Aromatase inhibitor
- Lowers estrogen
- Increases testosterone
- Reduces bad cholesterol
How To Use Grape Seed Extract?
As a dietary supplement, benefits have been seen from taking as little as 150 mg of grape seed extract per day.
Typically, people take anywhere from 150 – 300 mg of GSE per day. With some studies reporting users taking 800 mg – 1,000 mg per day.
However those high doses are not typical and may not provide any benefits over taking lower doses.
What Are The Side Effects Of Grape Seed Extract?
Since GSE is such a natural supplement, similar to literally eating the seeds of grapes, it is generally considered very safe and nontoxic.
There have been no reported side effects from people taking 600 mg daily.
One study even pushed it to the limit and found that daily doses of up to 2,500 mg of GSE per day still produced no negative side effects.
