We're sure that you have probably seen or heard that famous clip of Arnold Schwarzenegger talking about “the pump” in the gym…
The pump is when “blood is rushing into your muscles” and “your muscles get a really tight feeling, like your skin is going to explode any minute.”
During resistance training, when you target a specific muscle and contract the muscle with an adequate amount of weight you will start to make blood in your body rush to that muscle group.
This is otherwise known as “the pump”.
There is a common misconception in the fitness community that a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle.
The thinking is that if you become strong as an ox in all exercises, then your body will get huge to accommodate the strength increases.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
There is a reason why pro bodybuilders tend to train with half, or even sometimes as low as 1/3 the weight of power lifters, yet their muscles look much bigger, fuller, and more developed than power lifters.
This is because they are chasing “the pump.”
Your bicep doesn’t know how much weight you are curling.
It doesn’t know if the dumbbell you are holding is 10 lbs or 65 lbs, it just knows that it is being stretched and contracted with an amount of resistance that it can either handle or it can’t.
Many people tend to follow the “bigger muscle is a stronger muscle” theory, and therefore pound their muscles with low rep, extremely high weight exercises for every single workout.
Doing this will eventually lead you to being as strong as an ox, being able to throw up hundreds of pounds in your compound lifts.
But guess what?
Even though you can lift a damn house, your body will not be NEARLY as developed as it would be if you trained for hypertrophy instead of of strength.
The guys that focused on the pump will have much better looking bodies than you.
Despite the fact that you can lift double the amount of weight that they can.
We know, it seems baffling.
But it comes to a point where you need to choose between muscular development and muscular strength.
You need to ask yourself, do you want to look great and be less strong? Or do you want to look okay and be extremely strong?
If you want to look the best that you can look, then every time you go to the gym you need to be training for the pump.
Training for the pump, (hypertrophy) focuses more on the mind-muscle connection each rep, contracting the muscle properly on every single rep, and using enough volume to achieve a nasty pump.
The result of stimulating the muscle with strict form, higher reps, and moderately heavy weight vs. just plain damn heavy as shit weight for low reps is that the first method will drive much more blood into the muscle group you are targeting.
Driving more blood into the muscle group helps break down the muscle fibers more sufficiently and will ultimately stretch the fascia of that particular body part to a far greater degree.
The fascia is a thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle group.
When you get a very good pump, you can actually stretch that layer of fascial tissue to a far greater degree, ultimately leading to much higher levels of hypertrophy.
This is why it is very uncommon to see any pro-bodybuilder ever using rep ranges below 10-12 (at minimum), as they are always trying to maximize muscular hypertrophy, as well as minimize the chance of injury.
Proper Nutrition + Training Your Ass Off + Getting Skin Tearing Muscle Pumps Each Workout = Maximized Muscular Hypertrophy Potential
So this begs the question, what can you do in your power to maximize fascial stretching during your workouts to make optimal size gains?
We have a little secret that we will share with you for absolutely INSANE muscle pumps…
But first, let’s get your bases covered with what else needs to be in check first.
1. Adequate Calorie Intake
If you aren’t eating to grow, then it becomes a lot harder to get a good pump each workout.
This means that if you want to maximize your growth, you need to be in a calorie surplus, because even if you get a massive pump every single day, if you don’t have enough calories in your diet then you won’t recover enough to actually grow in the first place.
2. Adequate Water And Carb Intake
It's time to forget what you think you know and just accept the truth. Carbohydrates and water are the true flood gates to getting insane pumps.
Think about it like this.
Over 80% of your muscles are made out of water. You get a pump is when blood (water) rushes into your muscle.
Carbs help to hydrate your muscles. This is why they are called “CARBOHYDRATES”.
If you are trying to grow muscle, you should be in a calorie surplus and implementing carbs around your workouts (at least) to help shuttle nutrients to the muscles for recovery, as well as to saturate your muscle bellies with glycogen and water, which will give you a much fuller and bigger look.
If you are operating in a ketogenic diet for example, you will be constantly glycogen depleted so it will be near impossible to get a good pump.
Also, if you are severely dehydrated good luck getting a pump.
You need to make sure you are drinking enough water as well or else nothing else will matter.
So your diet is in check, now what?
